In existing buildings it is vital to understand the current status
of the existing flues. In order to establish the final fireplace
design and opening sizes a survey will need to be
carried out and a report provided.
What you are aiming to establish is:
Flue Size
Flue Route
Flue Condition - relined, broken, feathered
Flue Status - removed, blocked, partially blocked or open
This process requires one or more of the following actions:
Opening up of the fireplace if boarded up or covered
Cleaning
CCTV surveys
Flexitrace (running cables down the flue and tracking via
receivers).
Ground Penetrating Radar - used to scan walls to establish
routes and locations.
Smoke Tests
This crucial information is used to decide the best way of
making these existing flues operational in the context of
their intended future use.
